Job Announcement:

Mill and Field Operations Associate

Description:

Are you interested in taking on a key role in the revitalization of local grain economies? Do you have a good head for operations, enjoy working on your feet, and are detail-oriented and organized? Are you willing to take initiative and responsibility to help out with everything from operating our milling line to minor construction projects to helping plant and harvest heirloom grain. Are you comfortable working with minimal supervision?

We are relocating our milling operations from Esparto (Yolo County) to a larger commercial building in lovely Vacaville over the next 6-8 weeks. We plan to be operating full-time from the new facility starting in mid-November.

Capay Mills seeks an Operations Associate to help with the relocation while taking responsibility for our weekly flour production and order fulfillment.

Work at the mill involves:

  • Reviewing weekly orders and confirming they are accurately reflected in the weekly production worksheet

  • Organizing workflow and raw material needs based on the production worksheet

  • Operating milling equipment to ensure product quality, food safety, correct operation and regular maintenance

  • Packaging milled flour for retail inventory as well as online and wholesale orders

  • Tracking individual orders from order through shipping and fulfillment

  • Occasional deliveries as far as the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento region using a company vehicle

  • Maintaining a weekly inventory of raw materials and consumable items

  • Daily cleaning of production areas and compliance with all applicable food safety and good manufacturing regulations

  • Communication with owner and sales associate to review operations, sales, material supply and equipment maintenance

  • Interest and willingness to assist with field work involving planting, harvest, and post-harvest grain processing on a seasonal basis

Requirements for the position:

  • Current California driver’s license and insurance

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 60 lbs.

  • Tolerance for working in a dusty and loud environment (breathing and hearing protection provided)

  • No allergies to cereal grains, corn or other foods we mill

  • Willingness to pursue food safety certification (paid by Capay Mills) as required

  • Ability to work up to 8 hour shifts on your feet, in a physically demanding environment

  • Detail-oriented and able to independently create workflows to meet production schedules

  • Willing to drive to Esparto, Yolo County through the end of October, before working full time from our Vacaville facility

The position will start at 24 hours weekly, but we anticipate it growing to a full-time (40 hour) position once we have relocated and production volumes grow. Until the position becomes full-time, you will have the flexibility to set your own schedule. In addition, you can anticipate encouragement to learn more about the grain economy from field to kitchen; and an opportunity to join a growing and vibrant community committed to bringing regenerative, sustainable agriculture, local food models, and healthy diets to all segments of society.
